Respond to the question below using complete sentences and evidence from the text. After you write your post, be sure to respond to two other student postings using "Accountable Talk."
1. What conclusion can you draw about the effectiveness of solving problems with a team? Write your conclusion and three details from the story and/or from your own experience that support your conclusion.
I think it is easier to solve problems with others. One reason of this is because I think that more brains are better than one. Another is that one person might be better at algebra while another is better a multiplication, see what I mean? The last reason is that you can have fun while doing it!

Johnathan,
I completely agree with all that you have stated. However, I noticed that your response is missing evidence from the text. So this morning, at 4:30 a.m., I whipped that small book out of my backpack and started scanning for details that fit some of your MAIN IDEAS. On page 5, I discovered this:
"Each person had his or her own strengths. Bobby was very focused and worked fast. Catherine was skilled at logic problems and remained calm under pressure..." You see, this passage explains what some of the individuals' strengths are and how they each bring something beneficial to the team. I think this is a great example of your statement "Another is that one person might be better at algebra while another is better at multiplication." I hope you will be able to include some great evidence from the text for your other statements as well. Great job drawing a conclusion. Your opinion was very clear.

Solving a problem with a team is hard because you have to decide what strategy to do. You have to tick and work it out with your team. You also have to be a team player

I agree with you Ally. Yes, they all have their special skills that help them, but they are all more successful working better as a team instead of working alone. Their skills can work a lot better with each others then by there selves, it also helps them a lot better solving problems as a team to hear each others solutions to solve a problem.

The conclusion I can draw about the effectiveness of solving problems with a team is it can be hard to work as a team or it can be easy because their is more than one mind. If their is more than one mind their are different attempts to the problem, so you have a better chance of getting the correct answer. When you have a team of students it may be hard to work together because some students might only be open to using one way to solve a problem. Their are many different types of teams. Some might be open to new ideas. Others might be a little less open minded and only want to use one way to solve the problem.

I think it's way easier to work with others to solve problems. One reason I think this is because when you have more people, you get more input to use and help you get a better answer. Another reason is because one person might be good at writing and phrasing, and another person might be good at coming up with ideas. Last but not least, you can definitely have more fun with a friend than you can with yourself!

Working together as a team is very effective. In the story the team works hard to reach a goal, it was to compete in the math competition.
Their main goal was to win though. Being a team makes winning easier.

My conclusion is that teams work better by helping each other. One detail is a team (any team) could have a better chance of winning. Another detail is that the team would have a better chance of understanding the math problem. One last reason is that they can double check each others work and helping them if they need help.

I think that it's more effective to work as a team. I think that because they can solve problems faster by helping each other. Another thing is that if someone needs help, then the rest of the people could help them if they do need help. They can help them by doing the problem together so they understand and it sometimes goes faster if they do it together. In the book they have to solve problems on their own. When they're done, they all check each others problems to see if they are the same. If they are all the same, most likely, it is right. If someone's is different, they all go over it again and everyone's is right.

I think its more effective when you solve problems as a team because of lots of things. When you work with a team to solve problems you could ask them if you don't understand a problem or part of it. In the book it said they shared each others ideas to solve the problem. It also said that if they think that there was a better way to solve the problem they remembered there is more than one way to solve a problem. I also think that if you work problem together on one problem you could do different parts to get it done faster. Also if you a working on a math problem you could break it up and then put them together after you do the broken up problem. That's why i think its more effective to work together.

It effects it because, if your working by yourself, it's kind of hard, but when you work as a group, it goes by much faster and you can hear each others ideas. You can also have better strategies to solve that problem. But to do this they need to use teamwork. Bobby Shen, Catherine Lio, Alexandra Ilac and Kevin Tiary all did that to win the competition. It also makes them argue sometimes when another person wants to do this, but the other person wants to do that. They also played card games to get to know each other so they can solve problems faster and smoother without arguing with one another.

I kindly disagree with Aurora because I think they would fight so much over whose answer to use that it would get overwhelming and so chaotic that the Judges would get annoyed. Sometimes people come from different areas so they might not be able to speak the same language, and that would be a disaster. Card games may be able to help but it also may not be able to, because sometimes cards is just for strategy and math is not strategy.

I can understand why the math team got the honers award and won! I know that working together was effective and was a great idea.It worked because they split up the work and got it done faster. Plus I now from past experiences that working together helps. one time me my brother and my parents working on division my parents against me and max. me and max won by using teamwork. my parents didn't at all. The team won because they used teamwork to make it go faster.

It could be less effective and more effective because it could be ineffective because sometimes teams would probably fight a lot and that there wrong or that they should go with there explanation, it would be total chaos! But it could be effective too because they could learn from each others mistakes and learn to not do it again. That is why I think it could be less effective and more effective if you decide to solve problems together.

Dear Fourth Graders,
You've all contributed wonderful ideas about why and how working as a team is effective. Many of you even used specific names of characters from the story. I'm wondering if there were any specific moments in this story where those four competitors had to work together as a team that you could include in your responses?
I'm hopeful that there is something in the text that has led you to such conclusions about teams working together to solve problems. Find some moments in the story that *SHOW* their teamwork.

They're is the contraction for they * are.

I think that when you work together you can achieve more then if you could alone. you can see this because in the story there's more people to check your work, you can have more fun with other people, therefore reliving some of the pressure, and if you win your competition then you will have more people to celebrate with.

That more the people the better chance of winning.you know what they say "more brains than bronz".One detail to support this answer is:A team needs to practice together two-three days before competition. It's away to get to know how fast each other are at different answers.Another detail to support my answer is:with your team before you go to the competition get up early and together do stuff together like games and talking about are problems and beliefs.Detail 3 is:You all may have different things that you do best at,but when you put them all together you create a math team that can be unstopable.
